This leadership institute is an intensive learning experience that contributes to the sharing of effective teaching practices and the development of teachers’ confidence in their own writing. The upcoming invitational summer institute (Summer 2020) will be focused on digital and print literacy.
Fellows can expect to:
- Be coached to demonstrate their best approaches to the teaching of writing (1 ½ hour presentations)
- Write daily and extensively with a weekly paper as well as daily journal writing and presentation-assigned writing
- Participate in a writing response group
- Read and discuss research related to writing instruction (4 books)
- Participate in a weekly social activity that builds community and camaraderie
After the institute, Fellows become Teacher Consultants and serve as Teacher Leaders for the UC Merced Writing Project. They join other teacher leaders in the California Writing Project and the National Writing Project.
Who can apply?
Teachers who have taught at least two years may apply. Applications are welcome from K -14 teachers in all disciplines as writing is a cross-disciplinary literacy skill. We are particularly interested in teachers of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Fellows for the summer institute are chosen on the basis of their application, successful teaching experience, and recommendations. They are interviewed by a panel of UCMWP Writing Project Teacher Consultants. Those who are selected will earn university credit and receive a stipend which includes university registration and parking fees.
